The short answerSeeley Lake averages about 119 inches of snow a year, most of it from November through March. Winter brings free groomed Nordic skiing at Seeley Creek (December 1 to March 31), roughly 350 to 365 miles of club-groomed snowmobile trails, ice fishing and, in good snow years, the finish of the Race to the Sky sled dog race.
Winter is long at Seeley Lake, and the snow is the point. NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals for the Seeley Lake Ranger Station total 118.9 inches of snowfall a year, with nearly 30 inches in each of December and January.1 That snow supports free groomed Nordic skiing, hundreds of miles of groomed snowmobile trails, and ice fishing on the chain of lakes. It also means cold: January averages a high of 32.0 F and a low of 12.1 F.1

Nordic skiing at Seeley Creek
The Seeley Creek Nordic Ski Trails are the valley’s winter centerpiece: about 18 km of skate and classic track one mile east of Highway 83 on Morrell Creek Road, groomed by Seeley Lake Nordic Ski Club volunteers and free to use (donations welcome).3 From December 1 to March 31 the groomed trails are for skiers only, with no hiking, snowshoeing, biking or dogs.3
The club hosts events through the winter, including the OSCR 50K race (held January 29, 2022), Skiesta and a biathlon. Check the club’s site for the grooming report and current dates.34 The Forest Service also lists cross-country skiing among the area’s winter activities.7
Snowmobiling
The Seeley Lake Driftriders club grooms the area’s snowmobile trail system. How big the system is depends on who you ask: the Bigfork Eagle reported in 2020 that the club maintains 365 miles of groomed trails in the Clearwater Valley, while other reports round to “more than 350.”56 Either way, it is a large network. The club grooms under a Lolo National Forest special-use permit, starting any time after December 1.6
Some summer hiking trails double as snowmobile routes in winter; the Morrell Falls trail, for example, is open to snowmobiles after December 1 (see our Morrell Falls page). For current trail maps and grooming, ask at the visitor center or the ranger district (406-677-2233).13
Ice fishing
The Forest Service lists ice fishing among winter activities in the Seeley Lake area.7 Key FWP rules for 2026:8
- In waters not open to spearing, an ice-fishing hole can be no larger than 144 square inches, or 12 inches in diameter.
- Northern pike spearing is open on Seeley, Salmon, Inez and Alva lakes, and northern pike have no limit on those lakes.
- Kokanee snagging on Seeley Lake runs through December 31.
- Western District waters are closed to fishing for bull trout unless a specific exception applies; release any you catch.
On ice safety: no authoritative ice-in or ice-out dates exist for Seeley Lake, so we do not publish any. Ice thickness can vary from year to year and across a single lake. Ask locally, check the ice yourself, and stay off ice you are unsure of.
We also could not confirm a current annual ice-fishing derby; check the events page.
Race to the Sky sled dog race
The Montana Race to the Sky is a February sled dog race with a Seeley Lake finish. The 100-mile race runs from Lincoln to Seeley Lake, and 300-mile teams pass through Seeley Lake on their way to the Owl Creek turnaround.910 Low snow has hurt it: the race was canceled in 2024 and again in 2026, and organizers have said they are aiming for 2027.9 Check the race organizers before planning a trip around it.
Winterfest
A Winterfest celebration has traditionally been held in late January or February. In 2020, for example, Seeley Lake Elementary hosted a Winterfest on Saturday, February 8, with skating and snow sculptures.11 We could not confirm dates for the coming winter; watch the events page.
Avalanche safety: what we know and do not
If you ski, ride or snowshoe in steep terrain in the Swan Range or Mission Mountains, avalanche conditions matter. The West Central Montana Avalanche Center (missoulaavalanche.org) publishes avalanche forecasts from Missoula.12 We could not confirm that its forecast zones include the Seeley-Swan area. Do not assume coverage. Check the center’s site for its current zone map, and call the Seeley Lake Ranger District at 406-677-2233 for local information before heading into avalanche terrain.13
The groomed Nordic trails and the established snowmobile trail network are a different situation from backcountry slopes, but conditions on any steep slope deserve respect.
